The role of the Nova scheduler in managing quality of service

Cloud service providers are striving to provide premium services (at premium pricing) to attract mission critical and performance critical applications, while providing best-effort level of service (at competitive pricing) to attract all other applications.

This calls for a cloud service delivery system that supports differentiated service level per application or per tenant in terms of (high) availability and performance.

In this presentation we will show how Openstack differentiated cloud services can be achieved just by adding VM group scheduling policies to the Nova scheduler. We will describe the VM-Ensemble extension we have recently introduced to the Havana Nova Scheduler to cover the availability aspect by providing Anti-Affinity scheduling policy to achieve host failure tolerance.

We will also describe other VM group scheduling policies like “Network-Proximity”, “Host-Capability” and “Host-Exclusivity” to cover performance and security aspects of service level that we are planning to introduce going forward in the Nova Scheduler roadmap.

This is a joint work of Gary Kotton from VMware and Gilad Zlotkin from Radware.
