Summary:

PayPal case studies for SDN using Openstack Neutron is presented along with scale and performance data for various deployment environments.

PayPal and eBay have been in the forefront of deploying community version of Openstack for data center orchestration to deploy private hybrid clouds. There are multiple environments where Openstack and its various components have been deployed ranging from Developer/QA, staging, pre-production and production environments. There are myraids requirements for the various environments in addition to the financial and regulatory compliance.

In this presentation, the use cases for deploying Openstack Neutron and SDN at PayPal (an eBay Inc company) will be presented for the various environments based on the requirements along with performance analysis for overlay and flat networks. Challenges related to hybrid deployment involving both bridge and overlay modes will be examined in detail. A comparision of pros and cons of the various deployment methodologies will also be examined.

Description of the Presentation:

There are several environments in which Openstack with Neutron has been deployed at PayPal.

- Developement, QA and Staging

- Mergers & Acquisitions private community cloud

- Production Website

Multiple Neutron deployment strategies have been implemented (overlay and bridged) based on the unique requirements of the environment. Using overlay technologies (VXLAN, GRE, STT etc) gives flexibility in managing the address space and utilization of the compute resource, it does take additional compute cycles to process encapsulation and decapsulation of the overlayp headers in addition to introudcing penalty for latency. Bridging technolgies on the other hand tend to give better latency (comparable to the bare metal hypervisor) but in the process limit the cloud provider and tenant flexibility in addressing schemes and VM placements.

We have deployed both bridging and overlay schemes in our deployment. In some cases (Production), the hypervisor were configured to support both bridging and overlay. We call this scheme the hybrid scheme. This scheme inherits the advantages of both the technologies and provides for a flexibile deployment model that can address the needs of various environemtns. We show a scheme where the integration bridge(br-int) can trunk traffic to overlay bridge (br-tun) or a bonded ethernet bridge (br-bond0) based on the tenant requirements and its integration with Openstack.

The results of the throughput and latency analysis for

- Hypervisor to Hypervisor in the same rack (L2) and different racks (L3 hop)

- VM to VM in the same rack (L2) and different racks (L3 hop)

Will be presented along with conclusions.
